  17. <p>A rash of violence in and around Israel further dampens prospects
  18. for peace

  21. <p>     It's been a bad spell in the midst of a bad season. Gunmen shot
  22. an Israeli couple in their automobile last Sunday, injuring
  23. both; the next day stone throwers who hit a car fractured the
  24. skull of an infant passenger. At a Jerusalem bus stop on the
  25. same day, an assailant believed to be Palestinian stabbed a
  26. man to death and injured a woman before fleeing. Israeli soldiers
  27. shot and killed five Palestinians last week, for a total of
  28. 18 this month. The blood swapping comes amid tensions over the
  29. deportation in December of about 400 Palestinians as well as
  30. the current effort to resume Middle East peace talks. Worsening
  31. the climate, Israeli and South Lebanese Army units killed six
  32. Lebanese and Palestinian gunmen as well as two civilians in
  33. clashes north of the security zone. U.S. Secretary of State
  34. Warren Christopher waltzed into the region's ferment, arriving
  35. in Cairo at the start of a six-country tour. His task: to get
  36. the peace talks moving again.
